A native New Yorker with a passion for travel, Claire Distenfeld began collecting remarkable objects and experiences at a young age. As she grew, her memory became an anthology of museums, shops, landscapes, streets and more. Later working in the art world, she added to this collage, developing a singular vision comprising the classic, the avant-garde and everything in between.
When Claire—in collaboration with her father Fred, a former importer and manufacturer of luxury goods—decided to share this vision with the world, she went in search of the ideal vessel, something that would embody both Old World elegance and modern innovation. She found it just off Madison Avenue on 69th Street, a five-story townhouse situated at the crossroads of fashion, art and design.
With the help of interior designer Ryan Korban, Claire and Fred transformed the space into a treasure trove of the world’s finest items and named it Fivestory, a nod to not only the building but also the distinct stories and histories behind each of the brands and objects placed within its walls.
Today, these stories are reflected in Fivestory’s men’s, women’s and kids’ ready-to-wear, which positions renowned international designers alongside cutting-edge creatives. They are also found in exclusive Fivestory collaborations that reside alongside timeless treasures and contemporary art—and in impeccably crafted accessories, fine and fashion jewelry, and home décor that span the globe. There is always something new, an unexpected layer to discover.
Collectively, these items create a new, dynamic story: the story of Fivestory New York and its customers, who come to enrich their own tales with the boutique’s rare offerings.
